Common Questions

Residential Electrical FAQs

Common questions from Triangle homeowners about residential electrical services. Don’t see yours? Call us directly — we’re happy to help.
How many outlets can you put on one circuit?
We typically install up to 10 outlets on a 15-amp general purpose circuit. A 20-amp circuit can handle 13 outlets. The actual number depends on the expected load from devices you’ll plug in. Kitchen small appliance circuits get fewer outlets because those devices draw more power. We calculate the total expected amperage and size the circuit appropriately for your needs.
We rarely need to open walls for simple outlet replacement. We remove the old device and verify the wiring is safe and properly sized. Then we install the new one in the existing box. If the box is damaged, too small, or lacks a ground wire, we may need limited wall access to correct those issues properly.
A 20-amp receptacle has a horizontal slot on the left side. It requires 12-gauge wire on a 20-amp breaker. Standard 15-amp outlets have two vertical slots. They work on 14-gauge wire with 15-amp breakers. We install 20-amp circuits in kitchens, bathrooms, and workshops where you’ll use high-draw appliances regularly.
We can extend from an existing outlet if the circuit has capacity. The box must not already be full. We check the wire gauge, breaker size, and current load on that circuit first. If adding another device would overload the circuit, we run a new dedicated line from the panel instead. Safety comes first in every decision we make.
Those are GFCI outlets. They shut off power instantly when they detect a ground fault. They prevent electrocution in wet locations like bathrooms and kitchens. We install them within six feet of sinks. We also install them in garages, basements, and outdoor areas. The test and reset buttons let you verify they’re working correctly each month.

We pull permits for any new circuits, rewiring projects, or service upgrades. Simple device replacements in existing boxes usually don’t require permits in most jurisdictions. We check your local requirements and handle all inspection scheduling. Permitted work protects your home value and insurance coverage if issues arise later.
